June 4, 2015- The Friends of Times Beach introduces our first Pollinator Conservation garden/Area
The Friends of Times Beach is pleased to collaborate with Erie County, The Great Lakes Alliance, and Capco in planting our initial demonstration Pollinator Conservation Area garden. The garden is located near our main entrance next to Wilkerson Pointe Park.

Thanks to Vicki Haas of the Erie County Department of Environment and Planning; Greg Olma and other staff from  Erie County Parks; Nate Drag, Watershed Project Coordinator of the Great Lakes Alliance; and Paul Fuhrmann of Ecology and Environment. The materials and many volunteers provided by corporate partner Capco.

Funding for the Project came from several sources. Capco committed $500 for the purchase of compost, native plants, and native seeds as well as the volunteer labor; Ecology & Environment provided native plants and expertise; Erie County Department of Environment and Planning and the Erie County Parks Department provided labor and equipment; Friends of Times Beach Nature Preserve provided guidance and site knowledge; and Alliance for the Great Lakes provided coordination for the event.

This Pollinator Conservation Area demonstration garden is designed to provide food sources and habitat for late summer and early fall migrating butterflies, as well as native bees including the Monarch Butterfly, and the rapidly declining native American Bumblebee. Plants include Spotted bee balm, Butterfly weed, Tall Ironweed, Common Milkweed.
