Times Beach Nature Preserve
Iconic Species
The location of Times Beach Nature Preserve- at the confluence of Lake Erie and the Niagara River, adjacent to the dense urban city of Buffalo New York, and on the outer harbor waterfront makes the place very unique for both humans and wildlife.
Times Beach Nature Preserve is also the western gateway to The Niagara River Corridor Globally Significant Important Bird Area.
As part of our ongoing effort to protect and conserve Times Beach and the many species of wildlife that depend on the nature preserve, we are identifying iconic species that will both help symbolize our work, and engage and educate about the significance of the place. Our intention is to create links to information about important species.

Passenger Pigeon Ectopistes migratorius
Now extinct by human exploitation-but this beautiful and abundant bird once was the most common bird in North America and in Western New York and Ontario. Its extinction in 1914 is a cautionary tale that tells of a species that went from billions to none in less then 50 years. Our region contributed significantly to that extinction.
