The Friends of Times Beach Nature Preserve
The Friends of Times Beach Nature Preserve and the Buffalo Institute of Urban Ecology, Inc are proud to collaborate with the Friends of the Erie Niagara Marine Sanctuary for the NOAA Nomination and to accept donations on behalf of the organizing and outreach work to promote this nomination. Donations will help to cover travel expenses, website costs, and materials development and distribution. Until last year, The Friends of Times Beach Nature Preserve had not solicited money for our programs or projects other than small donations from friends. However, it becoming increasingly clear that we play an important role in both advocacy for outer harbor issues related to development and the conservation of nature and ecology. We have also become an increasingly important educational resource for all issues relating to Times Beach Nature Preserve, outer harbor, and Niagara River Corridor wildlife, avian, and pollinator issues.
In order to sustain our ability to participate in these advocacy and educational contexts we need to raise money to do our work. We need your help. Your contributions are very important. If you support our work and want to help us, please consider a donation.
We are excited that the Outer Harbor area is becoming more accessible and more popular. Last summer we had days where 200-300 people visited the Nature Preserve. This summer we expect that number to continue to increase as access by bike, including a new bicycle water ferry and increased access through the completed Ohio Street Corridor. In addition the new Buffalo Harbor State Park has opened up just down Fuhrmann Blvd. from the Nature Preserve, and more activities at places such as Wilkeson Pointe Park, and the Historic Lighthouse, both adjacent to the Nature Preserve are taking place. We enthusiastically support opportunities to engage the public on issues surrounding conservation, wildlife, and education.
We have been concerned that The Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC) has been proposing development of condos on the outer harbor including areas directly adjacent to The Times Beach Nature Preserve. We know that inappropriate development, such as that proposed by ECHDC, will have significant and negative impacts on the preserve. We promote "appropriate development" that creates less harm to our important nature preserve. We are very busy engaging both the ECHDC and the general public on these issues.
In recent weeks and through a series of meetings with ECHDC leadership, the ECHDC has begun to reconsider some of the condo development. The ECHDC is moving to a "Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper" approach to outer harbor strategies, which we support. The devil is in the details and your support will help us to remain engaged in this very crucial discussion.
Friends of Times Beach Funding Campaign Spring 2015
This year we are more active than at any time in our existence. The Friends of Times Beach Nature Preserve has partnered with the Buffalo Institute of Urban Ecology, Inc. a New York State registered not for profit 501 c-3, in order to raise money to promote and support our many activities and programs. They take a small percentage of donations for administrative purposes (2-10%). This is the first time in our history that we have decided to raise money for materials, programs, and outreach. Your donations are tax deductible.
The increased activity on the outer harbor brings both challenges and opportunities to the Friends of Times Beach. The challenges include consistent needs to address increased development oriented pressures on the sanctity of the preserve as a place to conserve and protect nature. The opportunities come as we find ourselves able to expand our educational and outreach opportunities with new audiences.
We have a number of programs, opportunities and needs. Our target is to raise $15,000 by Memorial Day. Here is what we plan to use the money for:
-Reprint our brochure so that we can distribute them to inform people about the nature preserve and our website.
-Plan and design additional educational material including material relating to our birds, butterflies, dragonflies, native plants, and other flora and fauna resources.
-Increase our programming. It is our goal this summer to have tour guides available each Saturday morning from Memorial Day to Labor Day. In addition we would like to present special programs about Times Beach, Pollinators -including the Monarch Butterfly, the Niagara River Important Bird Area, and avian conservation strategies.
-Purchase binoculars, bird scopes, and field guides so that we can make them available to students and others that participate in our programs and tours.
-Maintain and mange our website.
-Maintain and manage our listserve so that we can keep our friends informed about activities and issues related to the Outer Harbor and Times Beach
-Design and plan habitat enhancements including pollinator and Monarch Butterfly plantings and educational material. Our goal is create a demonstration garden near our main entrance that can serve to anchor a wildlife corridor focused on birds and butterflies for the entire outer harbor.
We are also seeking donations of binoculars, bird scopes, bird and nature field guides, a video projector, and a couple of laptop computers. If you can help please use our contact form to let us know.
